Privacy policy

What data Word for Word collects, why, who processes it, how long it is kept, and the rights you have over it.

This is our privacy policy, written in plain language and kept current as Word for Word grows. We've tried to be honest about what we collect and why. If something isn't clear, write to privacy@wordforword.io and we'll talk it through.

Data we collect

Word for Word is operated by Justin David Howard, who is the data controller for the personal information described here.

  • Account data — email address, authentication identifiers, and settings.
  • Journal content — entries, prayers, tags, journeys, and reflections you generate.
  • Billing data — subscription state and payment references held by our payment processor. We do not store card numbers.
  • Technical data — logs and diagnostics needed to operate and secure the service.

Why we process it

To provide the service you asked for, to produce reflections you request, to take payment for paid plans, to keep the service secure, and to comply with legal obligations. We do not process journal content for advertising or profiling.

We rely on performing our contract with you for account and journaling features, our legitimate interest in keeping the service secure and working well, your consent where we ask for it, and legal obligations where the law requires us to keep records.

Processors

We use third parties for hosting and database storage, authentication, transactional email, and reflection generation. Journal text is sent to a reflection provider only when you ask for a reflection, and it is not used by us to train models.

Paddle.com is our Merchant of Record. Paddle handles checkout, subscription management, payments, invoicing, and sales tax compliance, and receives the information needed to do that. We also share information with professional advisers and with authorities where the law requires it.

Retention

Journal content is kept until you delete it or delete your account. After account deletion, content is removed from active systems promptly and purged from backups within the ordinary backup rotation. Billing records are kept as long as the law requires.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, access is restricted, and administrative access is logged. We do not claim end-to-end encryption. See our plain-language privacy page.

Your rights

Depending on where you live you may have rights to access, correct, export, restrict, or delete your data, and to object to certain processing. You can export or delete your data directly from the app, or write to privacy@wordforword.io.

Children

The service is not directed at children under 13, and where local law sets a higher age of digital consent we apply that age instead.

Changes

We will notify you of material changes before they take effect and keep the effective date on this page current.
